Experience Shakespeare at Griffith Park this Summer!

Do you want to expose your kids to great literary influences? If you’re staying in hotels in Hollywood CA, check out Free Shakespeare Festival Griffith Park Shakespeare Festival Thursdays through Sundays at Griffith Park.   The Independent Shakespeare Company (ISC) started performing “A Winter’s Tale,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “The Comedy of Errors” June 28 and will continue hosting free re-enactments until September 2. Donations are accepted and appreciated although all performances are complimentary admission.

“The Winter’s Tale” is in its last performing weekend July 27-29. You can catch performances of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on August 5, August 12, August 16, August 25-26 and September 2. The final play is “The Comedy of Errors,” which will play August 2-4, August 9-11, August 17-19, August 23 to 24, and August 30 to September 1. All performances take place near the old Los Angeles Zoo bear caves.

Each show includes an introduction event, including workshops, talks and guest performers. Families can gain insight on each play, learn Shakespeare’s unique language, and take a tour of backstage. All participants will be given materials to take home in both English and Spanish. Workshops will take place before “The Winter’s Tale” on July 29. Those before “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” will occur on August 5 and August 25. The “Comedy of Errors” workshops will happen on August 11, August 19 and August 31.

On select evenings this summer, festival art partners will hold pre-show performances at 6:30pm. If dance appeals to you, come on July 26, August 5, August 12 or August 16 to see invertigo dance theatre from Cupid Painted Blind. The Jumbo Shrimp Circus will delight both children and adults before plays on August 17, August 23 and August 30.

The Salon Series will discuss the intersection of the Shakespeare and modern-day culture. Meet lecturer Claire Marie-Peterson under a tree in the performance area at 6pm. Reservations are recommended at cronk@iscla.org or call 818-710-6306. She will discuss Shakespeare and the science of chaos on August 4. For more information, click here.

All events are free to attend and close by so be sure to check one out this summer!
